The one thing standing between us and greatness is the tendency to Compare — ourselves with others. Magic happens when we stop the comparisons and Dare to Care.
To dare means to have courage, to be a Trailblazer, and to go where angels fear to tread. To care encompasses a desire to serve. The focus is on others; it is NOT on ourselves. In other words, our worldview is outward not inward.
Last week on Friday, two Master Craftsmen were discussing a “fair price” for their Customers. Earlier in the week on Wednesday, the three of us had met and prepared a Better Business Plan for the remainder of their year.
At the moment we finished preparing their Better Business Plan, they were quite confident in what a “fair price” was —for themselves and their Customers. Yet, two days later they were talking about a “flat rate” book.
Change Nothing; Nothing Changes
The two fellows and I were in a Zoom Meeting video conference, where in three different locations we could see and hear each other. I bit my tongue and sat on my hands until they had thoroughly talked about the ups-and-downs-and-all-arounds of Flat Rates.
About to pop, I finally said, “Should you get your hands on the secret sauce of the Flat Rate book, here’s what you’ll discover: 1) Montana rates are probably lower than New York rates, and 2) Your value to Customers cannot be properly measured by the “opinion” of a Flat Rate.
For 35+ years, the older gentleman has compared himself to others — hoping to find that he has value. Silly him! I’ve known him for 15+ years and know for an absolute fact there is no greater Craftsman in his chosen field.
Beyond that, he is a fine specimen of a human being. Yet, he doubts his worth. Because, others have told him he is less than perfect — and, he has believed them. Funny thing, though: the naysayers are quite imperfect, too.
In fact, perfect is the enemy of good and the Master Craftsman is quite good with Product and People. His care for others might just qualify for the great category. Yet, the ghosts from the past taint his enjoyment of the present.
Our public-school systems are designed to pour young children into the hoppers, churn them through the processes, and tip them off the conveyor belt as little yellow pencils, with the expectation they all go off to College.
Well, now we have several generations of “Educated Idiots” — with certificates and credentials to decorate walls and adorn business cards. Yet, the Process did NOT enhance the inherent gifts of these young People.
In other words, they might have been trained to make a living. However, they were not taught how to live. Which makes a big difference in the larger scheme of becoming productive Citizens — who dare to care.
The societal expectation is to: fit in, go along to get along, and otherwise conform to the opinions of the upper echelons. If only those in charge of the propaganda had the best interest of their subjects in mind.
The premise of “flat” is the constant theme for the downtrodden to accept. No “ups” to experience the exhilaration of accomplishment and no “downs” to learn the lessons from mistakes.
We’re told “flat” is safe. Yet, when individuals in a hospital “flat line,” families mourn their loss. How many died years ago and someday they will, finally, be buried with the appropriate accouterments of the Average Joe? Because, a “comfortable” rut is simply a grave with the ends kicked out.
There is a better way.
Conformation to Transformation
In my neighborhood, I believe there are as many dogs as people. I’m intrigued by the fortitude of the owners to reach down with the little green plastic bags to pick up the “droppings” of their cherished critters.
I’m even more amazed at the patience invested to train their best friends. No amount of time or resources are spared to teach the tricks and manners necessary for mutually rewarding experiences.
For those of us with children, we fully understand the investment made to “bend the twig” of the next generation. From the depths of love, we choose to share the Stories and offer the guidance that only parents can give.
So, if children and pets can be encouraged to move from the conformation of base desires to the transformation of higher understanding, what is possible for our own minds?
Do you believe we, too, can resist Confirmation to achieve Transformation?
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect.Good Book
Yes, there will be days the mission seems impossible — to train our minds into new patterns of thought and habit.
We’re motivated by either Pain or Pleasure. So, pick your medicine. For some, the pain of the past will drive them forward. For others, the pleasure of the future will draw them into a world of their imaginations.
Either way, the goal is to STOP comparing ourselves to others — and dare to care about ourselves and everyone in our sphere of influence. Each of us have gifts that only we can share with the deserving.
Please, don’t “cast your pearls before the swine” — but, passionately offer the best of YOU to me. With respect and appreciation, I’ll receive what you so generously share. No one else has your uniqueness; only YOU do.
Believe and Succeed
The strangest secret is, “We become what we think about.” However, only 5% of the population is thinking — the other 95% are conforming. After the conception of a goal, all we have to do is put forth the effort to create.
Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.
Conceiving an idea (dream) is worthless — unless we act on it, with purpose and faith (belief). We achieve at the speed of Belief.
What you believe will be done for you.The Word
Masters of Destiny
The two gentlemen in the introduction to this story have nothing left to prove. They are quite accomplished in their chosen profession, and they CARE for those unable to care for themselves.
Not only are they Master Craftsmen, the world is their oyster. They have made the investment of blood, sweat, and tears in their Business. Now, they’re ready to receive the dividends — the rewards for their passionate desire to serve.
If only, I can get them to Believe — in themselves. Then, they will discover they have no competition in the marketplace. Because, at the moment they STOP comparing, they can focus all their energies on daring and caring.
By doing so, we achieve such a high level of performance, there are no competitors in that realm. We find ourselves enjoying Heaven on Earth.
